The TERRITORy
Tenuta Buon Tempo is located in the Val d’Orcia, in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, facing Monte Amiata. The slope of the hill where the vineyards are situated has an elevation difference of around 130 meters, between the highest and lowest points, over a distance of just 800 meters. The particular composition of the soil surrounding the estate, mostly poor in organic matter and certainly well-drained, encourages the vines to seek water and nutrients deep underground. This ensures their survival during the driest seasons.
The pronounced elevation difference also creates a strong temperature variation between day and night, favoring a slow ripening of the grapes and, as a result, good acidity in the final wine, despite the vineyards’ full South-East exposure.
The constant breeze coming from the coast and the presence of Monte Amiata to the South provide protection against harsh weather and vineyard diseases, thus supporting the estate’s organic farming practices.
The landscape surrounding Tenuta Buon Tempo is among the most complex from a sedimentary standpoint. A territory whose roots reach back to the Miocene and Pliocene epochs, when the land was emerging and the sea was slowly retreating.
The soils tell this story: an intricate and dynamic pattern, made up of fluvial and alluvial sediments at the lower elevations (80–100 m a.s.l.), which gradually shift into hilly landscapes (250–400 m a.s.l.).
Here, clay soils with calcareous stoniness emerge, along with clayey and silty-clay deposits of Pliocenic origin.
A geological mosaic that makes each parcel unique.
The vineyards
14 hectares of vineyard are divided into 8 distinct parcels, each with its own characteristics. For this reason, each parcel is managed separately, from pruning to harvest, through agronomic practices tailored to its specific needs.
